چکیده

In the paper entitled "The Fundamental Free Mode of the Earth's Inner Core," by Louis B. Slichter, which appeared in the February issue of this volume, the author wishes to make the following corrections: On page 186, 4th line from the bottom, the stated value of the gravitational response associated with the suggested oscillation is too high; read "0.1" (not "0.64") IM gals. The associated amplitude is then about 8 cm and the associated energy is about 3 X 1021 ergs, or only 0.03 per cent of that released in the quake. On page 188, 13th line from the bottom, the maximum local velocity for the core mode under discussion is about 1 X 10-2 cm/sec, i.e. about the same as the fluid velocity associated with secular magnetic changes. On page 189, line 8, read " a/2a," not "r/2 t."

Frequency Aanalysis of Annular Plates Having a Small Core and Guided Edges at Both Inner and Outer Boundaries

This paper deals with frequency analysis of annular plates having a small core and guided edges at both inner and outer boundaries. Using classical plate theory the governing differential equation of motion for the annular plate having a small core is derived and solved for the case of plate being guided at inner and outer edge boundaries. The fundamental frequencies for the first six modes of ...

Dynamic Characteristics of Joined Steel and Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Tubes: Experimental and Numerical Investigation

The fundamental frequencies and mode shapes of steel and carbon fiber–reinforced plastic (CFRP) cylindrical shells with steel inserts were investigated using finite element analysis and modal testing. The free-free boundary condition was tested with modal testing using the roving hammer method and verified by finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The results show good agreement between the test...

Gas Sensor Based on Large Hollow-Core Photonic Bandgap Fiber

One concern in using photonic band-gap fiber (PBGF) as a gas sensor is the response time. In this type of the gas sensors, response time is the time required for gas to diffuse into the hollow-core. So considering a large hollow-core PBGF (HC-PBGF), the response time can be significantly reduced. But in the large HC-PBGF, the fundamental issue is the presence of higher order modes (HOMs). Somet...

Regional variation of inner core anisotropy from seismic normal mode observations.

Earth's solid inner core is surrounded by a convecting liquid outer core, creating the geodynamo driving the planet's magnetic field. Seismic studies using compressional body waves suggest hemispherical variation in the anisotropic structure of the inner core, but are poorly constrained because of limited earthquake and receiver distribution. Here, using normal mode splitting function measureme...

A CLOSED FORM SOLUTION FOR FREE VIBRATION ANALYSIS OF TUBE-IN-TUBE SYSTEMS IN TALL BUILDINGS

In this paper the dynamic response of tube-in-tube systems for tall building structures is investigated. Inner and outer tubes are modeled using equivalent continuous orthotropic membranes; in which, each tube is individually modeled by a cantilever box beam. By applying the compatibility conditions on deformation of the two tubes, the governing dynamic equations of the tube-in-tube structure a...
